Kwanzaa at the WOMB!

The WOMB hosted two nights of the city-wide Kwanzaa celebration this year.

Monday December 26th (Umoja – Unity) and Saturday December 31st (Kuumba- Creativity) took place at the WOMB from 6:00-8:00pm. These free, family friendly events included the traditional candle-lighting ceremony as well as music, guest performers, and discussion about each night’s featured principle.

On Saturday 12/31, a free TOY GIVEAWAY for children under age 12 took place beginning at 3pm. Children also experienced our special planetarium exhibit highlighting the constellations which inspired the pyramids at Giza. The 6pm Kwanzaa celebration was followed by The WOMB’s weekly Expression Lounge, an open mic session for local poets, musicians, and comedians.

Where Black Creatives Meet

Sunday, December 11th launched the first meeting of Akron Black Creatives, a group for people of African descent with a creative flavor – writers, visual artists, crafters, musicians, poets, fashion designers, and any one with an open mind and an expressive soul. Members come for inspiration, guided exercises, help with creative blocks, feedback on works in progress, new connections, collaboration, commiseration, and whatever else they need to keep their creative spark burning. You can learn more about the group and future meetings here.
